about

Κοκκινιά 1955
Kokkinia 1955
This 9/8 instrumental was composed by the famed bouzouki player Kostas Papadopoulos, (the musician actually heard playing on “Zorba’s Dance” from the movie and other classic 1960s recordings), and an eccentric version he released in the 1970s has become a bouzouki standard. His birthplace, the neighborhood Kokkinia of the song’s title, is one of the famous districts of Piraeus (the port city adjacent to Athens) settled by the Asia Minor refugees of the 1922 population exchange, and thus a nexus of both Rembetika folklore and working-class pride.

about

Greek Judas New York

Greek Judas plays rock versions of songs from the Greek Rebetika tradition. They are songs of the Greek underworld and of the refugees fleeing Turkey who filled the Athens slums in the 1920s. It's the music of knife fights, hash dens, prison life & heartbreak.
We play them loud, on guitars, bass & drums.
