about

Νέοι χασικλήδες a.k.a Έμαθα πως είσαι μάγκας
Nei Hasiklithes a.k.a. Ematha Pos Eisai Mangas
Young Hash Smokers α.κ.α I Found Out You Were A Manga (trad.)
One of the older songs in the Asia Minor school of Rembetika, the melody is one of those shared by Greeks and Turks who once lived side by side in what is now southern Turkey, the rhythm is a slow 9/8 Zeimbekiko (more on that later), the lyrics are Greek and mythologize the romantic and violent subculture of the manga, the rude boy of Aegean seaports. Many recorded versions exist, with and without lyrics, but the most famous are probably by the uncanny Asia Minor-style singer of the 20s and 30s Antonis “Dalgas”, and more recently, the Greek pop diva of the 1980s, Haris Alexiou.
“So I’ve heard tell you’re a manga - I learned that you play dice, that you’re a hash-smoker, you’re a real Manga, a nightcrawler -Come around, come around around and say yes, say you will…I heard you’re a good-time boy, you’re a player and a pimp.. Come around, around, around again you manga - say you will!”

about

Greek Judas New York

Greek Judas plays rock versions of songs from the Greek Rebetika tradition. They are songs of the Greek underworld and of the refugees fleeing Turkey who filled the Athens slums in the 1920s. It's the music of knife fights, hash dens, prison life & heartbreak.
We play them loud, on guitars, bass & drums.
